In March 2008 I began Finding Pennies. In December 2008 I began sharing these "Penny Tales" with a few close friends. They encouraged me to blog the Penny Tales such that more people could enjoy the Adventures with Penny Angels.

Today Doc and I worked in the yard, graded student papers, worked on some designs for the new house, did laundry, and completed numerous other house chores. Finally at 6 PM, Doc announced that it was time to get out of the house to do some Penny Finding before it got dark.
Doc felt “nudged” to search the high school parking lot for coins. I told him the chances of finding coins there were not as high as the grocery store - couldn’t we just save time and skip the walk through the lot? He drove to the lot.

Doc spotted one penny before he got out of the van. I told him the South half of the lot was mine, he could go “take a hike” on the North side. He began to drive away but spotted 5 pennies in one spot - on MY side! I found an embedded at the same time and told him he could claim that one IF he could free it. He did. Then as he drove away again, another Sit-N-Find -- a dime.
We then each went our separate ways. We collected a total of 16 coins in that “Target Rich Environment”.
Then we did go to the grocery store -- in order for Doc to use the bathroom there. He also collected three pennies and a dime while cruising through the store.
The final stop was der Wienerschnitzel for Doc’s 3 hot dogs; no dogs or coins for me.
Total: 20 Coins P (17), N (0), D (3), Q (0) = $0.47
Where do I begin on a day like today? A dozen short stories. All filled with Joy and smiles.
As an engineer, I’ll take things chronologically.
Doc took Sparky (his little Chihuahua) out for breakfast. They returned with one burrito, one penny (Coin #1) and one piece of bacon which the gal at the drive-through window prepared just for Sparky! They were Happy Hunters.

10:00 AM
I asked the Penny Angels if they ever dealt with the stock market? They seem to do pretty well with coins, how did they do with shares? I looked on line at my portfolio and said, “Well, if you are listening, how about getting my balance to $ ___ before closing today. (A good day would be a $100-$200 increase, I was asking for approximately $1,000 increase!)
***************
11:00 AM
A colleague shared that he had been Penny Pondering some issues. The Penny Angels delivered two pennies and an Israeli coin at the grocery store as his answer today.

Lesson: The Angels will tailor your find as needed.
11:30 AM
Once on campus, I needed to return equipment I had borrowed for Commencement. I met this wonderful couple in the hallway. He had graduated 47 years ago and this was his first time back on campus. It was definitely a JOY encounter and I even shared Penny Tales with them. I had hoped to find a coin while talking to them, but found one a few minutes later. I was walking past one of the areas where a concession stand had been stationed. I could “feel” a coin. I searched the sidewalk and grass several times. Nothing. I was leaving saying, “I guess the nudging was wrong this time”. And suddenly there was a bright shiny coin in front of me! It actually turned out to be a 2¢ Euro from the Netherlands. (Coin #2)
Insert of Wikipedia information:
2 cent euro coins (€0.02) have a value of one-fiftieth of a euro and are composed of copper-covered steel. All coins have a common reverse side and country-specific national sides. The coin has been used since 2002 and was not redesigned in 2007 as was the case with the higher value coins.
***************
Noon
I checked the balance of my stock portfolio - it was $4 shy of the challenge amount! WOW!
OK. That is close enough. Good job!
***************
This afternoon I was having some work done at the Campus Copy Center. The gal said it would take approximately 10 minutes. I told her I would return just as soon as I found a penny.
I walked through the Student Center, but since the school term is over, everything was shut down, the tables and chairs were pushed aside, and the floors were being polished. Not a target-rich environment. Besides, my co-worker said he had just searched that area and already retrieved two coins.
I was returning to the Copy Center in defeat. Conversation: “Penny Angels you know it makes for a much more effective story when I tell people I’m going to find a coin and then you deliver. It helps to validate this Manifesting principle. Doesn’t help the credibility if I return empty-handed.” At that moment I spied a penny tucked under a leg of one of the outdoor dining tables! “Nice work Angels!”
As I passed by the Round Table pizza patio I was “nudged’ to look there. I argued, “Penny Angels do you know how many times I have walked there in the past and never found a coin? It is a waste of my time.” The Angels said to go anyhow. A few feet into the patio was a penny. There was a couple who witnessed the find. He had graduated from CPP 17 years ago. I stopped to help them get a photo (ARK) and told them about Penny Tales. I then returned to the Copy Center with Two coins and shared smiles! (Coins #3&4)
***************
This afternoon after the stock market closed, I was anxious to see if the Penny Angels had delivered the additional $4 to meet the challenge. Boy, was I surprised. There was not just $4 more, there was $400 more!
Lesson: Don’t underestimate the Angels!
***************
This evening as I was leaving campus, I walked past the vending machines. I had walked past them several times today. The campus is essentially deserted right now, so the likelihood of finding any coins was slim. I looked and saw nothing. The nudging said, “Stop. Don’t just give a half-hearted look. Set down your gear, get down on your knees and look way beyond the typical line-of-sight. I did -- and spotted a quarter! (Coin #5) I was almost nose to the ground to reach for that coin when I spotted another one! And this one was a $1 piece! (Coin #6)
Lesson Look beyond the standard Line-of-Sight
***************
I made a quick stop at the grocery store on the way home. There was a penny by the change machine. (Coin #7). Then there was a penny in the check out line. The wife of a colleague was at the beginning of the line and I was at the end, but that did not stop me from conversing with her about Penny Finding -- across the other people and the cashier. There were smiles and Penny Cards passed around to anyone within earshot of that Penny Find. It was fun. (Coin #8).
Enough stories for today.
There were numerous other JOY encounters, but instead of reading mine, go make some of your own!
Total: 8 Coins P (6), N (0), D (0), Q (1) + $1 = $1.31
Doc suggested stopping at the Circle K store on our way to school in order to look for coins. He searched the parking lot while I went inside. Neither one of us saw any obvious coins. So I said to the Angels. “I feel as though there should be a coin in here. Please just reveal it to me”. I nudged the rubber floor mat by the cash register and moved it about 1”. Sure enough there was a penny under it!
Lesson: Sometimes the prize is not super obvious and you must take a little initiative.
Next Doc went to a Starbucks within the grocery store across the street. That store is fairly new, the floors are a crisp white linoleum, and the store is kept really clean. It is not a target-rich environment. I found a silver coin (which I assumed to be a quarter) underneath the change sorting machine. As I was walking to meet Doc, I spotted a dot in the greeting card aisle. I was not even going to bother investigating because surely a coin would not be laying there so blatantly in the middle of that white floor? I detoured the 10 ft. and collected a dime. (Coins #2&3).
Lesson: (Once again) Do Not Assume! Logic isn’t as smart as you think it is.
Listen to the nudgings.
As Doc and I left the grocery store, the tiniest little ray of sunlight reflected off something. I thought it was a water drop, but asked Doc to pause for just a moment while I walked the 15 ft. to investigate. It was a penny (Coin #4).
And that ‘quarter’? When I opened my hand to show Doc the coin, we discovered it was a Philipino Piso.
Total: 4 Coins P (2), D (1), = $0.12 US + one Philipino Piso
Note for those Engineering Penny Finders who like reviewing the data:
Doc and I finally totaled the coins found in May
308 US coins : P (226) + N (19) + D (43) + Q (19) + $1 (1) = $13.26
Plus: 2¢ Euro, 5¢ German, 1¢ Irish, 1¢ British
Plus: 1 game token of some sort, 1 CEC game token, 1 Indy bathroom token
Just like my students, I waited until the very last moment to get my “homework” done. We’ve known for months that taxes would need to be completed, but kept procrastinating. Finally early this afternoon we finished assembling everything. Just in time for our 6 p.m. meeting with our tax preparer.
On the way to our meeting we stopped at the office supply place to make some photocopies. Doc found our first coin there. Then he detoured past a Starbucks coffee (a new one for some adventure in our day). It did not have a drive through, so we did not stop there. As we were getting back onto the main road, Doc spotted a Sit-N-Find in the entryway to the huge shopping center. He made me hop out, run around the car, and fetch it for him. (Coin #2). The Starbcuks at the next shopping center also did not have a drive through, but it was fairly crowded, so we stopped there. While Doc got his coffee inside, I searched the tables outside - and collected MY coin for the day. (Coin #3).
***************
We met with our tax preparer and told him this year we have a new tax form - for the PennyFinders business. We told him the PennyFinders story. He reached for something by his computer. It was a Schmushed penny which he had received as a gift and was now giving to me. It had lines and lines of text on it - so tiny I could not decipher it. I finally figured it out. Written on the penny are the 10 commandments!
The tax guy had a penny story of his own. It turns out that he collects and saves each of his found coins because they promote the message “In God We Trust”. He keeps them in his gym bag and carries them back and forth to his workouts.
Doc’s comment: “Using that technique - As the number and load of collected coins increases, so does the spiritual and physical strength of the Penny Finder”
***************
I had to stop for some broccoli on the way home. I just wanted a quick stop. But Doc wanted a target-rich environment. He chose which grocery store to search. I found a dime as we were walking in. Doc found a penny at the coin redemption machine. I found a penny standing vertically against a counter base, then a dime under a coin return while waiting for Doc. Doc found a dime while paying for his groceries, then a dime where I had just been standing! (Coins #4-9)
Total: 9 Coins P (5), N (0), D (4), Q (0) = $0.45
Lesson: Sometimes the things we must do exceed our limited expertise or strengths. It’s nice when we can relinquish our burdens to a more capable being.
An incoming Email which I just gotta share with you. The writer is also alluding to that day recently when I asked for dime, dime, dime … but my dimes arrived AFTER midnight. Looks like she learned from my errors. ;-)
Tina, Just after I sent you that email with my edits for your Press Release, I went for a walk. Had some things on my mind that needed sorting out. Found 2 pennies and a dime! The dime came after a request from me asking for something silver followed by “today” please.
WOW! The power of manifestation is great. LP

General Comments:
Sure glad I took today off work. 99% of the day has been dedicated to PennyFinding. (I did take a few minutes out for a shower and to change clothes).
Evidently I slept right through the alarm clock, so when I got up at 8:30, it was FULL SPEED AHEAD. Spent the entire morning reviewing and editing Draft 1 of the Guidebook, finalizing the Press Release , responding to emails, etc. Also made initial contact with United Way rep.
There is so much to accomplish to maximize the Day #365 Mark. If we put out the Press Release, those Penny Angels better come through! Going on Faith here!
****************
Around 2:30 realized I needed to find a coin for today! Quickly showered, changed out of PJs and headed out. Went to the bank where Doc found a penny by the ATM machine. (Coin #1). Thank you honey, but I need to find one too.
We stopped next at the hardware store and at the office supply store No coins found. Not good.
We dropped off some house sketches at the architect’s office. Remember that project? (Which is why this whole PennyFinders began). OK. So I have spent maybe 10 whole minutes in the past two weeks on my dream project and probably 50-70 hours on finding silly pennies and related efforts. Does this make any CENTS?
Doc suggested that we next head for Carl’s Jr. which might be a target rich environment. (Plus he wanted lunch). After Doc placed our order, he s l o w l y drove up to the window while I hopped out to look for coins. Spotted one penny immediately. Then saw something in the mud of a concrete expansion joint (crack). Thought I might need to employ the chopstick retrieval system, but long fingernails worked - dime. Then I spotted a dime which I must have just walked past - and Doc had now just about parked on. Plus another penny. (Coins #2-5).
As we were driving away, I realized there was a sandwich in the bag versus my salad!
So I went back inside the store to remedy the situation - and collect a penny off the counter and another one by the beverage station (Coins #6&7).
Our next stop was the jewelry store to pick up Penny Pendant which was being gold-dipped. Each time I clean it, it is tarnished and dull again within a day or two. Not pretty. So this time I am trying a hopefully more lasting treatment - gold.
There was a Carl’s Jr. next to the jeweler. So I walked through the drive up area and claimed a penny and another dime. (Coins #8&9).
That was a good haul. Home by 4 pm to conduct PennyFinders calls. Two hours with Chaz in reviewing Draft one of the Guidebook. It is really shaping up!
***************
By 7 pm my stomach was growling and I realized I hadn’t eaten my lunch yet! I fear this PennyFinding is becoming an obsession!
I quickly ate lunch, then got back to work on PennyFinders. Meanwhile Doc had gone to Walmart. Ugghh. More Penny Finds! Shouldn’t he write his own Tale? I think he is well-trained now and should start his own Blog! He said, “but we are married. You always say that when it comes to money ‘What’s yours is yours and What’s mine is also Yours!’” So here is YOURS for today! Then he presented me with 8 more coins and his hilarious story…
He went to Starbucks for coffee. Did not see the coins on his way in, but noticed them while waiting for his decaf to be brewed. Three pennies and maybe a silver piece under one of the tables. Unfortunately there were two guys sitting at the table! Not cool for a GUY to reach under a table with other guys there. So he sat and sipped his coffee inside. Then he went outside and sat and sipped some more. These guys were not in any hurry to leave. (I would have just flashed the guys a business card as I was telling them the story and then grabbing the coins. They would have smiled and I would have had the coins).
So Doc gave up on those coins and went to Walmart. Made his purchases with no coins found. Wow! Took his bags to the car and returned to the store to use the bathroom. A nickel and penny in the play area. (Coins #10&11)
He actually drove all the way back to that coffee shop for the coins! This man has a severe case of Penny Fever. He claimed the three pennies, the dime, plus an additional penny. (Coins #12-16).
Next, he headed for the grocery store. Saw a penny on this way in, but it was in a group of people. He did his shopping, found another penny (Coin #17), then returned to look for the penny at check out. It was no longer there. I can just hear the nephews saying, “Uncle Doc, You Snooze - You Lose”!
***************
As I was writing tonight’s Penny Tale I laid the coins in front of me. I do this each night to corroborate the count and to ‘feel’ the stories from them. Dirt Dime was missing! I searched purse, counter, table, car, etc. Remembered I had wrapped it in a brown Starbucks napkin. Sure enough, it got thrown away with Doc’s lunch trash. So this dime was Found Twice!
Lessons: You Snooze, You Lose
Some coins will be ‘found’ several times.
Even though a coin has been trashed, it retains its value and can still can be retrieved before being sent to the dump.
A polished penny doesn’t stay polished without some additional intervention.
Today’s Total: 17 coins P (12), N (1), D (4), Q (0) = $0.57
Today (Saturday) was our Thanksgiving Celebration. We began that tradition many years ago when the kids, brothers, friends all had work or other places to be on Thursday. We just decided our family gathering would be “off peak” on Saturday.
It was after 1 a.m. by the time everyone had departed, some of the furniture was moved back in place and the majority of the dishes were washed. My eyes were not even focusing by then. Writing was not possible. So this note is a little late. Sorry about that.
Back to Penny Finding …
People often ask if I actively Seek coins or if they just appear. Yes and Yes, both. Yesterday (Friday) was a passive find. Today I was Hunting!
Around 1 PM I realized I’d better get out of the house and get Penny Finding. So I made a quick run to the store under the guise of needing some butter. No coins at the grocery store. Yikes! Walked over to In-N-Out. No coins in that area.
Needed to find a Target Rich Environment -- and quickly. The 99¢ store is always a good place to Search. It was very crowded. Lots of people, no coins! I walked next door to the car wash. I found an Electronic Coin. Close, but not good enough. I walked next door to the liquor store. Nothing in the lot or in the store. Things were not looking good.
I was getting disheartened.
Wrestling with myself or Penny Angels (not sure). “My faith is getting shaky here. Not sure if I will find a coin today. Must find one. Why MUST I find one? It’s not as if I was promised a coin every day. Then it would be fair to say my faith was being tested or that I was Doubting God. But there was no promise, so I should have zero expectations and just be happy IF something appears. Any day could be the last day of this ‘coincidental finding streak’”.
But then I started talking out loud to the Penny Angels, “Look. I have 30 people coming for Thanksgiving Dinner in a little while and I am out here searching for a stupid penny? This doesn’t make any sense. This is insanity. Would you please get off your *****s and help out a little here? If I am supposed to keep finding these bloomin’ coins then YOU need to make it happen - soon! I give you 5 more minutes, then I am going home.”
I went across the street to the self-serve car wash. Finally - a penny. Then as I was recording that find, I spotted a second penny. Yippee! God’s 2¢ worth in response to my sassiness.
I returned home to find the first guests had arrived. The rest of the evening was spent eating, and eating, and chasing kids and eating and dishes and eating …. J
After the guests had departed, Doc and I were moving furniture and straightening the sofa covers. There were two dimes and three pennies in the folds of the fabric. (Coins #3-7). Then some coloring pens fell behind the bookcase so I used a tool to retrieve them and got a 1946 nickel as well! (It is just one year younger than Doc). Wonder how long the coin was back there? (Coin #8). Doc said, “Too bad we did not find a quarter, to make it a ‘Hit for the Cycle’”. We went upstairs to go to bed. On the bathroom counter there was a quarter. Doc’s comment, “Oh Yeah, I found this coin earlier today under the silk flower arrangement, does this one count?” I’m not sure. (Coin #9)
Lesson: Maybe you don’t always need to leave your home in order to find answers. There may be times when you can “serve” right where you are.
Lesson: Once again - verbalize your request. (But maybe in more polite terms than I used).
Today’s Total: 9 coins P (5), N (1), D (2), Q (1) = $0.55
It’s Sunday evening and I’m wishing there were 3-4 more days to this weekend. I have not even opened the textbook for the two classes I am auditing, let alone attempted any of the homework. I used to be an A student and now if I was getting a grade it would be an F!
Penny Tales and many other things seem to come before homework.
***************
Morning Findings: We went out for breakfast and then stopped to water mom’s plants. No pennies. So we walked through CVS and Doc found a penny in the picture frame aisle. (Coin #1). While I went to the bank ATM machine for cash, Doc walked the grocery store to find a penny in the snack area. (Coin #2)
***************
This evening Doc declared that we did not yet have a respectable number of coins. Penny Fever. “The Readers want stories and more coins!” So we headed out for our weekly grocery shopping.
We stopped at the 7-11 because that is usually a target rich environment. I walked the parking lot uttering a SingSong, “Penny Angels, Penny Angels, What do you Say? Doc says we don’t have enough coins yet today”. Instantly I found a penny. I was recording that find and spotted a second penny. (Coins #3&4). Inside the store Doc was picking up a bright shiny, log house penny from right in the middle of the aisle. (Coin #5). Then he spotted a coin under the check out counter, so he bought a coffee while I dove for the dime. (Coin #6)
At Trader Joes I found a penny by the exit door as soon as we walked in. (Coin #7). Doc also spotted a penny in one of the check out lines, but it was underneath the cashier and the line was long. After shopping a while, we revisited that station when there was no line, so Doc swooped in for the taking. (Coin #8) As I was checking out, there was a penny in one of the cardboard candy holders on the counter (Coin #9).
At Sprouts groceries I searched all the check out lines when we arrived, then while we were shopping, then again when I went to pay. Nothing. While I paid for the groceries, Doc went to the bathroom. When he returned I was just finishing the transaction. He bent down and retrieved a dime which I had been standing over! Mushroom coin? (Coin #10). Doc’s comment, “That’s what you get for looking for pennies - you missed the dime!”
Today’s Lesson: “Don’t be so narrow minded (or blinded)”.
At Stater Bros. we didn’t see any coins. While I paid the bill, Doc walked outside to get more steps on his pedometer. (He has been achieving 10,000 steps nearly every day. I am so proud of him. I haven’t had a fitness goal in a while, so I haven’t even been wearing my pedometer.) Doc found a dime on a bench in front of the store. (Coin #11).
Today’s Total: 11 coins P (8) + D (3) = $0.38
Lots of coins found today - but not by Doc. He returned home from Starbucks this morning as a very frustrated man. He spotted a dime, but it was lodged within the grating of a food display cabinet and could not be retrieved. Foregone Coin.
***************
Around 3:30 this afternoon at work I decided to take a walk since I had been sitting at the computer for too long. Now that the cafeteria area is open again, it does make the coin finding much more likely to happen. (Target Rich Environment).
Within 5 minutes and a few hundred steps I collected:
2 (P), 1 (D), 1 (Q) at Taco Bell (spotted immediately as I was walking in the door)
1 Shiny (P) under the feet of a guy eating lunch. SHARED Penny Tales w/him.
1 (D) Carl’s Jr.
1 (P) at the muffin counter
1 (P) at Panda Express. In the middle of a white tile floor with 20+ people standing around it
Decided to approach the Carl’s Jr. from the other direction. 4 (P), 1(D), 1 (Q) SHARED the story with 3 Fraternity Guys in line.
So 9 (P), 3 (D), 2 (Q) at that stop. Where are all those nickels from last week?
***************
I said’ “Penny Angels how about a nickel to ‘Hit for the Cycle?’” As I said that, a plastic bottle rolled across my path. Yes, there is a 5¢ redemption value on those, so I guess that is close to what I requested. I would still, however, prefer the coin.
***************
I ventured down to the Student Center with the intention of finding that nickel.
2 (P) at the convenience store
5 (P) at Subway
1 (P) at Sushi station
1 (P), 1 (D) in the dining tables area
1 (D) and 1 (Q) at Round Table Pizza.
I stopped to speak with a colleague. Told him about Penny Tales and my search for a nickel today. As he walked away from our discussion, I spotted 1 (P), 1 (N), and 1 (D) on a nearby table. (No, he did not leave those). Then there was 1 (P) on the next table! I called for my colleague to turn around and take note of those! We spoke for a moment, then he again departed. I walked a few steps back to the table and there were 2 (P) pennies there! I would swear I saw no one in my peripheral vision coming anywhere close to where we were standing. I asked the student at the closest table if he had seen anyone pass there within the previous 2 minutes? “No”. Mushroom Coins?
So 13 (P), 1 (N), 3 (D), 1 (Q) at that stop. At least there was one nickel.
***************
As I was exiting the Dining Areas, there was a penny in my path. Then another one when I left the building. There were two in the game room and one on the side walk. (5 more pennies).
***************
Doc called home at 9 PM to say he was leaving campus and planning to stop at McDonalds. Did I want anything? I told him “No thanks - and DO NOT get any more coins because I am trying to write today’s Penny Tale before you get home and be done with it!”
Doc just walked in here with his burger. He said Hi to the dogs, gave me a kiss -- and handed me five pennies. Evidently it took a few minutes to cook his burger so he got out and walked some steps around the van - collecting pennies as he walked. Penny Fever
Lesson? Not sure today. Nothing is coming through to me, what about you?
Today’s Total: 42 coins P (32), N (1), D (6), Q (3) = $1.72
+ one foregone coin = $1.82
This site was created to spread the Penny Finding Fever and SHARE JOY.
